Hockley County Endowment Grant Story: Cochran Hockley Association of Retired Teachers (CHART)

The Hockley County Endowment granted Cochran Hockley Association of Retired Teachers (CHART) funds to build Little Free Libraries in Levelland. CHART’s mission for this project is to encourage parents to read 1000 books to their children before they start Kindergarten.

Louise Pendleton says, “CHART members are deeply invested in literacy and apparently so is our community.” The goal of the Little Free Libraries is to provide families with access to preschool-level books at any time of day or week. Pendleton states, “CHART has received books from individuals, businesses, clubs and city and school libraries.”

In September 2019, the organization teamed up with Levelland Middle School woodshop students to design and build Little Free Libraries to put in every city park. That November, CHART placed one of the libraries in Levelland’s Sherman Park. During the six months the library was open, it was closed from March through July, 600 books circulated into the community.

As of September 2020, CHART has three Little Free Libraries supporting their 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten mission.
